Community in Action

Char-Em United Way and Project Connect
Char-Em United Way completed their first incredibly successful Project Connect. Over 450 people attended from across three counties. Project Connect cuts through the red tape that so often makes it difficult for people in need to access the services they need. Over 50 agencies and business participated, providing direct services including health screenings; signups for health, income and social service benefits; substance abuse and mental health services; assistance in finding housing and employment; and income tax preparation and filing. A hot meal was served throughout the day, accompanied by live music. A kid’s activity area was staffed. Attendees received food bags, personal care and household supplies, and winter clothing. Free transportation for residents of both Emmet and Charlevoix counties was provided. All services were provided at no charge to those attending.

By bringing together all of the services in one place, in one day makes an immediate difference in the lives of many. United Way is excited about bringing Project Connect to our community. The event links United Way’s traditional safety net of basic services with our new focus on improving the financial stability of families. Project Connect was sponsored by the Homeless Continuum of Care Workgroup of the Charlevoix-Emmet Human Services Coordinating Body.
