MAUW honored The Dow Chemical Company and First Impression Print & Marketing as the first recipients of the Spirit of Michigan award on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the State Capitol. The Spirit of Michigan award recognizes both large and small Michigan companies that demonstrate community engagement strategies in the areas of health, income, and education. The 2011 Spirit of Michigan awardees were selected for their leadership in improving Michigan communities and focusing on the common good through corporate and employee engagement.

The Dow Chemical Company, headquartered in Midland, strives to enhance the quality of life where Dow people live and work. Dow employees give financially and share their talents and skills. The company sponsors many programs and events that help thousands of students engage in science and chemistry education, especially for girls and other minorities. Dow is a key sponsor and supporter of the regional 2-1-1 initiative, providing funding for the initial database development, infrastructure, and ongoing support.

First Impression Print & Marketing is a small Howell-based business, employing ten local residents. First Impression’s philanthropy is unprecedented; they offer many in-kind services to local organizations, including the Livingston County United Way (LCUW). They partner with LCUW for Day of Caring, and make it a priority to give back to the community that supports them. They close their doors and involve all employees with projects throughout the day, so everyone has the chance to share their time and talents.
