Each year, United Way of Washtenaw County partners with Washtenaw County schools to recognize and reward students for their volunteer efforts in the community. Students who volunteer 145 or more hours of service in a year can earn their school varsity letter, the same as those earned by athletes and musicians.
Last school year 2010-2011 was the first year, this program was offered and ten students were awarded their varsity letter in community service this past June. Read an article about it here. Be sure to also watch this 30-second video of one of the students that received the Community Service Varsity Letter.
